Hi, friend,
I hope your August has started off well. Summer in Portland has been rather gentle so far, but this week temperatures are expected to rise. 100 today, 106 tomorrow, 103 on Tuesday. I’m extremely grateful for cool indoor spaces and good books to read.
Highly Recommended
Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle
I had the great fortune to attend the Powell’s Beaverton event for Chuck Tingle a couple of weeks ago. Not the usual sort of book tour event—the Buckaroo himself had prepared a presentation for us, complete with voting on the best horror villains and discussions about their preferred love languages. (Portland’s favorite? Pinhead.)
Chuck was promoting his latest release, Camp Damascus. This horror novel delves deeply into the heroine’s sense of self and asks whether demons—personal or otherwise—can force us to deny who we are in our hearts. It’s a nightmare, a triumph, and a page-turner that kept me up at night, needing to know what would happen next to the characters I cared about so much. An incredible read.
Resonance Surge, a Psy-Changeling Trinity Novel by Nalini Singh
The Psy-Changeling series holds a special place in my heart, having gotten me through some very rough times. There are 15 books in the original Psy-Changling series and 7 books in the follow-on Psy-Changing Trinity series—all excellent science fiction romance, beloved characters, and strong, interesting world-building. The books can be read standalone, although of course reading the series adds great depth to the reading of each new book.
Resonance Surge invites us into the stories of Bear changeling (shifter) Yakov Stepyrev and telekinetic Psy Theodora Marshall. They partner to investigate a place of lies and evil that holds the key to Theo’s lost memories and the secret of her heart.
As always, Nalini Singh weaves a wonderful, powerful love story full of family, intrigue, and the opportunity to create the world we want and hope for.
